a solid is heated what changes is to kinetic energy and inter particle distance?

if a solid is heated up till its melting point the particles get more and more kinetic energy and will get converted to liquid and will move away from each other ,which will increase the interparticle distance, on further heating it will get more kinetic energy and will move more far forming the gaseous state....
