Given info : A solid round bar 3 m long and 5 cm diameter is used as a strut with both ends fixed. taking E = 2 × 10⁵ N/mm²

To find : the crippling load is...

solution : using formula, P = π²Ei/Le²

where E = elasticity = 2 × 10⁵ N/mm²

i = moment of inertia = π(d⁴)/64 = 3.14 × (50)⁴/64 mm⁴

= 3.06 × 10⁵ mm⁴

Le = effective length = 3 m = 3000 m

now crippling load, P = (3.14)² × (2 × 10⁵) × (3.06 × 10⁵)/(3000)²

= 6.7 × 10⁴ N

= 67 kN

Therefore the crippling load is 67 kN.
