A solid sphere of mass 10 kg is placed on a rough surface
having coefficient of friction M = 0.1. 'A constant force F =
7 N is applied along a line passing through the centre of
the sphere

Given :

Mass of sphere = 10 kg

Coefficient of friction (μ)= 0.1

Force = 7 N

To find :

The value of frictional force on the sphere

Solution :

  • We have the relation , a = Iα

        a = F-f / m

           = 7-f / 10

  • From the relation  , τ=Iα

       α = τ/I

          = fR / I

          = fR / (2/5mR²)

          = 5f/2mR

  • Equating both the equations,

       7-f / 10 = 5f/20

       7f = 14

       f = 2N

     The frictional force on the sphere is 2N
