solvent= 100 ml
solution=100+40=140

Concentration= solute/solution *100
40/140 *100=28.5%

It is the mass of the solute dissolved in 100 ml solution.

The formula is as follows :

Mass by volume percentage = (Mass of solute in grams / Volume of the solution in ml) × 100%

Doing the substitution we have :

Mass of the solute = 40g

Volume of the solution = 100ml

= 40/100 × 100% = 40%

The mass by volume percentage is therefore given as 40%
