Given that there is 50 gram of sugar (solute) which is dissolved in 250 g of water (solvent).

We have to calculate mass by mass percentage.

Mass by mass percentage is given as :- \frac{mass\:of\:solute}{mass\:of\:solution} \times 100\\\\

Here, what the mistake is done that students often take mass of solution as mass of solvent, but,

mass of solution = mass of solute + mass of solvent

mass of solution = 50 g + 250 g

mass of solution = 300 g

Hence, mass by mass percentage = 50/300 × 100

= 50/3 %

= 16.67 % (approx)
