A solution is prepared by adding 2 g of a substance A to 18 g of water. Calculate the mass percent of the solute.

Given :

Mass of solvent = 18 g .

Mass of solute = 2 g .

Mass percentage of solute in the solution is the percentage ratio of mass of solute and mass of solution ( both solute and solvent added ) .

% Solute = 2 g / ( 18 g + 2 g )× 100 %

⇒ 2 g / 20 g × 100 %

⇒ 100/10 %

⇒ 10%

The mass percent is 10 % .

Mass percent of A = Mass of A / Mass of solution × 100.

= 2g / 2g of A + 18 g of water × 100 = 2g/20g× 100 = 10%......
