Let mother's current age be x. Then, son's present age will be x/2, since the son's age is half mother's current age.

10 years ago, mother's age was thrice as old as the son. This will can be written as

x-10 = (x/2-10)*3

x-10 = 3x/2-30 or

2x-20 = 3x-60

Thus, 3x-2x = 60-20.

This gives x = 40, i.e. mother's current age is 40.

Son's current age is 1/2 of 40 = 20.
