To produce loud sound. The sound vibrations produced by sting forces the air to vibrate in the sound box. Generally the sound boxes has more surface area, so it creates more sound. If the resonance frequency of sound box matches with the string vibration. Then resonance occurs and sound box gives still louder sound.
