A sound wave and a light wave are reflected and refracted (or transmitted) from water surface. Show the changes in different physical quantities associated with a wave.

The sound wave and light wave shows different property with water surface.

  • For the sound wave, the water will act as the rarer medium and air will act as the denser medium. When the sound travels from denser to rarer then it will bends away from the normal.
  • The physical quantities like amplitude, speed, wavelength they will increases.
  • But the angular wave number decrease.
  • But in the case of the light wave or electromagnetic wave, the water tends to be denser and air to be rarer then wave will bend towards the normal.
  • Here, in that case the speed and amplitude deceases but angular wave number increases.
