a spaceship is moving with constant speed V in gravity free space along positive y-axis suddenly shoots out one third of its part with speed 2V along positive x-axis find the speed of the remaining part ?

By using conservation of momentum in X direction ,

Let velocity of remaining mass be v'

0 = I/3m(2v) + 2/3m(v')

v' = - v

In y direction

mv = 2/3mv' + 1/3m(0)

v'= 3/2v


Magnitude of velocity of remaining part =

Speed =

√(v^2 + 9/4v^2)

=(√(13) / 2 )v
