A species which can be present in a specific community but may also deviate to the other community as well is the phenomenon of "Ecotone" which is also linked as the edge effect. Ectoone is the transition zone between two communities, such as, forest and grassland which are biomes meeting at a zonal point mixing those two different species as well as the communities. Ecotone is having admixture of species which are belonging to both the communities. Some specific species may also occur exclusively in the zonal area or Ecotone. As a result of this, Ecotone may or will possess higher number of species than either of the two present communities. The drastic increase in number with an even density of species in the region of Ecotone or the community border is called "edge effect". The species which are found primarily or most abundantly or spend maximum or most of their time in a Ecotone or the community boundary which are further known a source "edge species"
