Electricity is useful to man in many different ways. Electricity was invented by Volta, but the applications of electricity have been ascribed to various scientists. Thomas Alva Edison has brought the world out of darkness today. He also invented the gramophone which has today developed into record players. Marconi invented the radio which cannot function without electricity.
The radio is an outmoded mass medium today, as it has been replaced by the television, which is more sophisticated invention of the modern era. Laser, ultrasound scanner and many other devices handled by doctors are operated electrical connections. Electricity has been applied in numerous practically useful ways.
Michael Faraday invented the dynamo, without which large cities cannot be illuminated during the night. Computers also function only with electric power. Electricity in our country is mainly produced from water by storing the water in dams and letting it flow at great speed over wheels which generate electricity.
This form of energy which has come as a boon to our age sometimes also threatens to welcome a bane in under-developed countries due to its erratic availability. The requirement of electricity by the year 2000 A.D. proportionate to the increase in population, will far exceed the capability of our hydroelectric projects to generate electricity, confirms the statistical survey.
It is possible that India may become self- sufficient in generating electricity in course of time, looking at the fast strides India is taking in the agricultural and industrial sectors.
