A sponge can be compressed and yet it is considered a solid. Why?

sponge is porous
it has lot of pores that trap air
when u press it the air escapes and the sponge gets compressed

sponge can be compressed due to its intercellular space but it is considered as solid bcz it has atoms on the fix ratio and same no. of atoms even after compression . may be.
