A spring gun has a spring constant of 18N/cm. The spring
is compressed by 12 cm by a ball of mass 15gm.
How much is the potential energy of the spring? If the
trigger is pulled, what will be the velocity of the ball be?

Answer:

Explanation:the potential energy is equal to (-1/2×k× x^2)

-1/2×18×(12)^2=1296Ncm

=12.96Nm

We know the initiatief energy=final energy

1/2mv^2=1296

1/2×15/100×v^2=1296=131.43

Given,

Spring constant=18N/cm

Mass of ball=15gm

To Find,

Potential energy of the spring.

Velocity of the ball.

Solution,

We know that the potential energy is equal to

U = -1/2×k× x²

    =-1/2×18×(12)²

    =1296Ncm

   =12.96Nm

We know the initial energy=final energy

K=1/2mv²

⇒1296  =1/2×15/100×v²

⇒    v      =131.43m/s

Hence, potential energy of the spring 12.96 Nm and velocity of the ball will 131.43m/s.
