A spring is tied with a fixed support at one end and a weight is attached to the other end of the spring. What changes in the spring would observe?
The mass of the spring will increase
The length of the spring will increase
The length of the spring will decrease
The thickness of the spring will decrease
Answers
The mass of the spring will increase
Given:
A spring is tied with a fixed support at one end and a weight is attached to the other end of the spring.
To find:
The observation.
Calculation:
First of all , we need to know all the forces acting on the block:
- Gravitational Force downwards
- Spring force upwards
Initially the spring force will be lower than gravitational force and hence the block will go down and the spring will get elongated.
After reaching a certain distance downwards, the block will experience equal spring force and equal gravitational force leading to translational equilibrium.
But due to velocity, the block continues to go down. Here the spring force becomes greater than gravitational force and the block gets to stop at the extreme point (amplitude) before coming back.
Hence in the initial phase after release of block, we get to see elongation of block.
Hope It Helps.
