A spring is used to launch a ball with a mass of 1.21 x 10-2 kg. The spring is compressed 17.8 cm using an average force of 27.7 N. For a launch, the ball is placed against the movable end of the spring and the compressed spring is released.

Suppose the spring launches the ball sideways along a track. When the spring is released, what is the kinetic energy of the ball the moment it leaves the end of the spring?

Explanation:

KE gained by ball = PE lost by spring

= kx^2/2

But F =kx for elastic spring So k = F/x

so KE gained = Fx/2 = 27.7*0.178/2. = 2.46 J
