So if a force F =k dynes stretches a piece of string by one cm., then it stretches each half of the string by 1/2 cm. Remember, the tension in every part of the string is k dynes. That is why the whole string is in equilibrium and not accelerating. So the force constant of each half of the string will be k/(1/2) = 2k.
