A square plate of side 20 m is placed horizontally 2m below the surface of water. The atmospheric pressure is 100000 Pa. Calculate the total thrust on the plate

Square side of plate (s) = 20 m

Depth below water (d) = 2m

Atmospheric Pressure (atm) = 100000Pa

Density of water (p) = 1000 kg/m³

Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 9.8 m/s²

Total Pressure = atm+dpg

= 100000+(2*1000*9.8) Pa

= 100000+19600 Pa

= 119600 Pa

Area of the square plate = s²

= (20)² m²

= 400 m²

Pressure = Thrust/Area

= 119600 = Thrust/400

= 47840000 N is the Thrust.
