A square shaped (side a) house has four gardens at four corners.


What is the perimeter of the house excluding the gardens?

The side of the square plot is √(400)=20m.
Hence the perimeter of the house is 4×20=80m.
This is because even if there are the square gardens at the corners, it can be thought of that the corners of the originally square plot have been "pushed inside". Since no part of the perimeter of the plot has been but away, it remains the same as it was before making the gardens.
