Given:

A square tile having a 40cm side is designed to withstand a pressure of 200N/m².

To find:

If a force of 45N can be applied on the tile?

Calculation:

Pressure is calculated as the ratio of perpendicular force applied and the area of the surface upon which force is applied.

Area of tile = 0.4 × 0.4 = 0.16 m²

Now, pressure applied :

P = (Force)/(Area)

=> P = 45/(0.16)

=> P = 4500/16

=> P = 281.25 N/m² or Pascal

=> P > 200 N/m².

Hence, tile will not be able to withstand the applied force.
