If the side of the square is increased by 4, then it's area increases by 60.

Let side be x, area be y

Hence:

x^2 = y

(x+4)^2 = y+60

=> x^2 + 16 + 2(x)(4) = y + 60

Substitute x^2 = y here:

=> y + 8x = y + 44

=> 8x = 44

=> x = 44/8 = 5.5 cm
