A squere shaped swimming pool with area 324 sq m has deck of uniform width 3m built around it. Find the area of the deck.

side x side = 324

side = √324 = 18m

Total lenth of one side = 18 + 3 = 21

Total area = 21 x 21 = 441

Area of the deck = 441 - 324 = 117m²

From the area we need to find the sides of the pool.

Area of a square = w²

This because it has equal sides.

Therefore :

w² = 324

w = √324

w = 18 m

The deck forms an outer square around the pool.

The side of the outer square is :

18 + 6 = 24 m

The area of the outer square = 24 × 24 = 576 m²

Area of the Deck = Area of outer square - area of the pool

= 576 -324 = 252 m²

= 252 m²
