A lightyear is a system of the astronomical measure similar to the distance on which a light approximately travel in one year.
So one light year is equal to 9.4605284*10^(15) m, and in that case, if a star is ten light years away and brightens up suddenly, it will take around 10 years to see the changes happened on the earth.
