A startling discovery by an Indian Farmer
Sankalp Singh Parihar, a farmer from Madhya Pradesh, was travelling to Chennai in search of hybrid coconut
saplings and little did he know that he was about to strike gold instead. It so happened that on his journey back
home, a fellow traveller in a conversation realized that Mr. Parihar was a farmer. The stranger also had some
mango saplings of his own. On insisting that the mango saplings were of a special breed, Mr. Parihar offered
to strike a deal of rupees 2,500 in exchange for a sapling.
Upon returning home Mr. Parihar planted, in his orchard, the mango sapling. Just like any mango sapling it
grew, but the fruit was of a rare variety. Four years later the plant started to bear fruits. Not knowing what
breed the mango was, he decided to name it after his mother, Damini. A business man who got a whiff of
special mangoes owned by Mr. Parihar, offered to buy them all for a whooping price of rupees 21,000. It was
then that he realized that he might be sitting on a gold mine.
His enquiry into the special breed of mango led to a discovery that Damini mangoes were in fact Miyazaki
mangoes from Japan, which are considered to be the most expensive variety of mangoes in the world. They
are also known as Taiyo-no-Tomago (Eggs of the Sun) for its red colour.
The Japanese farmers grow these mangoes in a very specific, artificially conditioned environment with utmost
care so as to expose the trees for a limited sunlight. This allows the mangoes to get just the right amount of
red colour. This makes the mangoes very expensive, so much so that a pair of Miyazaki was sold for $4,500.
Mr. Parihar on the other hand thinks that he will be able to make it more affordable to the public.
