In Bengal, the British government gained monopoly of trade in opium.
The Bengal was the largest producer of Opium during the British rule in India. The British established a state controlled trade monopoly on opium in Bengal and earned huge revenue from it. Excise was imposed on domestic sales. Opium was exported to China which earned huge profits for British.
The British actually gave the control of production and operation of Opium to the contractors who in turn had to sell the production to the British.
