Answer:

The answer is B)2.5cm

Explanation:

Loops of stationary waves consists of nodes and antinodes .The distance between two consective antinodes(crest) or nodes(trough) is equal to 1 wavelenght , same is the case with two consecutive crest or trough so when 10cm the total lenght is divided on n=4 (given) than one wavelenght comes out which is 2.5 cm .

Given:

A stationary wave is setup on a string of length 10 cm. Four loops are formed.

To find:

Distance between consecutive crests?

Calculation:

  • Since a stationary wave with 4 loops is formed, the crests would be analogous to antinodes.

  • Distance between consecutive antinodes is \lambda/2.

In this case :

4 \times  \dfrac{ \lambda}{2}  = L

 \implies \:  \dfrac{ \lambda}{2}  =  \dfrac{L}{4}

 \implies \:  req. \: distance  =  \dfrac{10}{4}

 \implies \:  req. \: distance  = 2.5 \: cm

So, distance between consecutive crests is 2.5 cm
