Initial weight of a marble used to build a statue=140 kg

Percentage of the marble that was cut away on the first week=35%

Weight of the marble on the first week:-

 = 140 - 35\% \:  \: of \:  \: 140

 = 140 -  \frac{35}{100}  \times 140

 = 140 -  \frac{35 \times 140}{100}

 = 140 -  \frac{4900}{100}

 = 140 -  \frac{4900 \div 100}{100 \div 100}

 = 140 - 49

 =\bold{ 91 \: Kg}

Thus, the weight of the statue's marble in the first week=91 Kg

Weight of marble chips that were cut from the statue's marble during the second week=26 Kg

Weight of the statue's marble during the second week:-

 = 91 - 26

 = \bold{65 \: Kg}

Thus, the weight of the statue's marble during the second week=65 Kg

Part of the marble statue that was cut away during the third week is:-

 =  \frac{2}{5}   \: \: of \:  \: 65

Which means :-

Weight of the marble statue during the third week:-

 = 65 -  \frac{2}{5} \:   \: of \:  \: 65

 = 65 -  \frac{2}{5}  \times 65

 = 65 -  \frac{2 \times 65}{5}

 = 65 -  \frac{130}{5}

 = 65 - 26

 =\bold{ 39 \: Kg}

Thus, the weight of the statue on the third week=39 Kg

Therefore, the weight of the final staue=39 Kg

Given : A statue is being carved by a sculptor. The original piece of marble weighs 140 kg. On the first week 35% is cut away. On the second week the sculptor chips off 26 kg and on the third week he chips off two-fifths of the remainder

To Find : Weight of the final statue (in kg) is

Solution:

Initial Weight = 140 kg

On the first week 35% is cut away.

Cut away = (35/100)140  =  49 kg

Remaining = 140 - 49  =  91 kg

On the second week the sculptor chips off 26 kg

Remaining 91 - 26  = 65 kg

on the third week he chips off two-fifths of the remainder

= (2/5) 65

= 26 kg

Remaining Weight   = 65 - 26

= 39 kg

Weight of the final statue (in kg) is 39
