Let the speed of the steamer in still water be x km/ h .

Then, the speed downstream

= ( x + 2) km / h

And the speed upstream

= (x - 2 ) km / h

Given, distance covered in 8 hours downstream

= Distance covered in 10 hours upstream

8 (x+2) = 10 (x−2)

8x+16 = 10x−20

8 x− 10x = 20 16

[ Transposing -10 x to LHS and -16 to RHS ]

- 2x = - 36 or 2x = 36

x = 18 km / hr.
