a steamer goes downstream and cover the distance between two parts in 6 hours while it covers the same distance upstream in 8 hours if the speed of stream is 2 km/hr find the speed of steamer in still water.

Let speed of boat is "x" and distance between 2 citites be "d"

In downstream speed will  be x+2

hence (x+2)6=d-------->1


and x-2 will be speed of boat in upstream

hence (x-2)8=d-------->2

from 1 and 2 we get x=14 i.e, speed of boat and d=96 i.e., distance between 2 citites.
