speed downstream=x+2

speed upstream=x-2

the distance covered in 6 hours downstream=4(x+2)km

the distance covered in 8 hours upstream=8(x-2)

4(x+2)=8(x-2)

4x+8=8x-16

4x-8x=-16-8

-4x=-24

x=-24 divided by -4

x=6

speed of steamer =6 km/hr
