A steamer goes downstream and covers the distance between 2 ports in 3 hours and covers the

same distance in 5 hrs when goes up stream. If the stream flows at 6 km/hr, then find what is

the speed upstream?

 {\underline {\underline{\Large {\bf \green {Solution:-} }}}}

speed of stream =3kmph

speed in upstream=x-3

speed in downstream=x+3

time taken for upstream=5hrs

time taken for downstream=3hrs

so

3(x+3)=5(x-3)

3x+9=5x-15

3x-5x=-15-9

-2x=-24

x=12

so speed of steamer = 12kmph

speed of steamer upstream=x-3=9kmph

Ur Answer :-

12 km/hr

Ur Explanation:-

Let the speed of the streamer in still water be x

km/hr

Speed of the stream-3 km/hr

It is given that while going downstream.thee

streamer takes 3 hours to cover the distance

between two port.

Speed of the steamer downstream=(x+3) km/hr

Dustance covered in 1 hour=(x+3) km

Distance covered in 3 hr-3(x+3)km

Distance between two ports=(x+3) km

It is given that while going upstream,the

streamer takes 5 hours to cover the distance.

Speed of the streamer upstream=(x-3) km /hr

Distance covered in 1 hr = (x-3)km

Distance covered in 5hr=5(x-3) km

Distance between two ports in this case =5(x-3)

km

The distance between two ports is the same

From 1 and 2 ,we get,

3(x+3)-5(x-3)

3x+9-5x-15

3x-5x-15-9

2x-24

x=12

The speed of streamer in still water=12 km/hr
