A steamer goes downstream and covers the distance between two parts in 5 hours, while it covers the same distance upstream in 7 hours. If the speed of the stream is 3 km/h, then the speed of the streamer in still water is

ChanYatLong: Let x km/h be the speed of the streamer in still water.
ChanYatLong: 5(x+3)=7(x-3)
ChanYatLong: 5x+15=7x-21
ChanYatLong: 5x-7x=-21-15
ChanYatLong: -2x=-36
ChanYatLong: x=-36/-2
ChanYatLong: x=18
ChanYatLong: The speed of the streamer in still water is 18 km/h.

the speed of the steamer in still water will be 3 Km/h.
EXPLANATION:
the steamer takes less time (5 hrs) to reach the destiny downstream whereas it takes little more time to reach destiny upstream. This is because of the stream's speed that makes the steamer to move fast downstream (along the direction of stream) and in upstream the steamer has to move against the stream and due to resistance of the stream it took time to reach up. However the steamer has its own speed 3 km/h and this should be the speed of the steamer in still water also.
