A steamer goes downstream from one port to another in 9 hours. It covers the same distance upstream in 10 hours. If the speed of the stream be 1km/h, what is the speed of the steamer in still water?

Distance = Speed * Time

Distance traveled by the steamer upstream = 10 (x-y)

Distance traveled by the steamer downstream = 9 (x+y)

∴ 10 (x-y) = 9 (x+y)

Speed of the stream is 1 km/h

⇒ 10 (x-1) = 9 (x+1)

⇒ 10x - 10 = 9x + 9

⇒ x = 19

Hence, speed of steamer in still water is 19 km/h.
