A steel wire of 95m length and 2mm^2 cross sectional area is freely hanging from a tower. What will be its elongation due to its self weight. Take specific weight of the steel as 78.6K N/m^3 and modulus of elasticity as 200N/m^2.

Answer:

Explanation:

Δl = F L / A Y

here force is the weight of wire = volume (length * area) * density (specific weight)

78.6 * 95 * 2 * 10⁻⁶  = 7482.72 * 10⁻⁶

elongation =  ( 7482.72 * 10⁻⁶ * 95 ) / 2 * 10⁻⁶ * 200 = 17.7 m
