A sting from insect X has a pH of 6 and a sting from insect Y has a pH of 8. The table shows the pH of four substances:
Substance. pH
hydrochloric acid. 1
sodium hydrogen carbonate 8
sodium hydroxide. 14
vinegar. 5

Answer:

On the basis of the chemical property of compounds, it has been divided into three groups

Acids, bases and salts where acids and bases combined to form salts. Acid-base chemistry plays an important role in chemistry because every chemical reaction can be classified as an acid-base reaction.

On defining acids and bases so many concepts came forward for the explanation of what acid is and what is a base. Mainly three concepts are there for acids and bases they are Lewis concept, Arrhenius concept and Bronsted-Lowry concept.

Acid-base chemistry is applicable both in a laboratory and as well as in biological level, that means acids are present in the human body also. This chapter comprises of an introduction to the fundamentals of acid-base chemistry, their reaction and uses.

Substances that are used to treat the two stings X Y are B sodium hydrogen carbonate. vinegar

  • Since insect X has a pH of 6 so it would be mildly acidic in nature. The mild acidity can be relieved by something mildly basic like sodium hydrogen carbonate having pH 8. Sodium hydroxide is too strong to be applied.
  • Insect Y has a pH of 8 which means it is mildly basic in nature. The mild basicity can be relieved by mild acid like vinegar having pH of 5. HCl is a very strong acid. It can never be used to applied over skin.
  • Hence, correct option is B sodium hydrogen carbonate. vinegar
