A Stitch in Time Saves Nine is a wise saying. This phrase refers to a hole in a cloth. This hole would certainly get bigger if not fixed in time. It means that a timely effort that will prevent more work later. It certainly means prevention is better than cure. Furthermore, this important phrase tells us procrastination is a bad habit. Hence, if a problem exists, then one must fix it immediately. If not fixed in time, then even more problems can arise.

Explanation:

On the surface, the proverb says that a thing that needs mending tought to be mended before it assumes serious proportions.

Take for example a cloth that is a little torn. It can be easily mended with a single stitch. But if it is neglected, it requires more stitches. Further neglect may also make it useless.

By extension, the proverb means that timely action helps us in overcoming problems. Prompt action at an early stage prevents serious trouble in future.

Same is the case of a student who falls into the habit of procrastination. He must read his lessons regularly. He must not postpone them. If he neglects to study in time he will have to strain before the examinations. He will have to ‘burn the midnight oil’. It may spoil his health and in addition there is every danger of forgetting whatever he has read. He becomes a victim of tension and fear.

A boy stole a pencil from a classmate and showed it to his grandmother. Instead of questioning him about it she kept quiet. The boy’s thefts went unchecked until one day he was arrested. If the boy had been corrected in time, he would not have become a thief. Timely action would have prevented him from falling into wrong ways. Thus the saying advises us to take timely action for ” a small hole, if neglected, will sink a big ship”.

Action at the right and required moment saves a lot of bother in future. Delayed action, adds to the problems and aggravate them, where after it becomes so difficult to deal with them or tackle them. This saying has a very rational meaning.

Your shirt gets a little torn at a place as you scratched against a thorny bush. Just on reaching home you take it to the darner it may even be your mother and sister and she just nicely puts a few stitches and it all looks in order.

If that is not done in time the torn part may further increase and then it may become difficult to repair it and give it the decent wearable look. One catches cold and develops a sore throat. You at once soothe it with a hot water saline gargle and by morning you would find yourself relieved. Or you just take on antibiotic tablet and you are well for your morning work.

In our life, it is always wise to remember that a stitch in time saves nine. This famous proverb reminds us that any task we perform in our life, if done properly will be established easily. We should be sincere and punctual in performing our tasks as planned. A small lag in any process might lead to great complications and lead to failure in nay task we take up in our life. If we work hard and execute our actions in a smart way, we can complete any task within the anticipated time. Instead of performing a task without proper planning, organized plan of any task would avoid repeating the same process again and again.

But you grow lethargic, postpone the gargle or the taking of the tablet, you keep coughing throughout the night and find yourself running slight temperature in the morning. Urgent matters required to be attended to in the morning and the day have to be put off may be you have lost a job for the interview of which you were to appear at ten in the morning.

Example:-

Just a little care would have made you feel well as also might have got you the job you have failed on two fronts just by failing in little timely action. And now it has taken you three days to recover from cough, cold and fever. A stitch in time would have saved you from nine. Timely action may need a little effort but saves a lot more efforts which may be forced upon by this in-time neglect.
