Given

  • Height of well (h) = 50m
  • Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 10m/s
  • Initial velocity (u) = 0

Find out

  • Time taken to reach the bottom

Solution

As we know that

→ h = ut + ½ gt²

→ 50 = 0 × t + ½ × 10 × t²

→ 50 = 5t²

→ t² = 50/5

→ t² = 10

→ t = √10 = 3.16 sec

Hence time taken to reach the bottom of well is 3.16 sec

Additional Information

  • v = u + gt
  • v² = u² + 2gh
  • When a body is dropped freely from height then its initial velocity (u) becomes 0

Given:-

  • Initial velocity (u) = 0 m/s

[∵ It was stationary]

  • Height of the well (h) = 50 m
  • Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 10 m/s²

To Find: Time it will take to reach the bottom of the well.

We know,

h = ut + ½gt²

where,

  • h = Height,
  • u = Initial velocity,
  • g = Acceleration due to gravity,
  • t = Time taken.

∴ (0 m/s)(t) + ½(10 m/s²)(t)² = 50 m

→ ½(10 m/s²)(t)² = 50 m

→ (5 m/s²)(t²) = 50 m

→ t² = (50 m)/(5 m/s²)

→ t² = 10 s²

→ t = √10 × √s²

t = 3.16 seconds (Aprox.)

The stone will take 3.16 seconds approximately to reach the bottom of the well.
