A stone is dropped from a balloon moving upwards with a velocity of 4.5 m s -1 . The stone reaches the ground in 5 second. Calculate the height of the balloon when the stone was dropped.

We know the balloon is going up in the air so if any object is going in the direction from earth towards sky than all values will be taken as positive (+ve) so we know that the height will be positive. So,

Given

u (initial velocity) = 4.5 m/s

t (time) = 5s

Solution

According to second formula

s = ut + 1/2at^2                                     - (1)

Replacing a by g ( gravitational constant )

Now, value of g is 9.8m/s^2 or 10m/s^2

Requesting you not to take value as 10m/s^2 until given in the question

Now, putting values in (1)

s= 4.5(5) + 1/2(9.8)(5)^2

s= 22.5 + 122.5

s= 145m

Hence the height of the balloon when the stone was dropped will be 145m
