Given:

Point above the top = 0.4m

Height of Window = 0.5m

To Find:

Time taken by stone to pass span of window

Solution:

Total height = 0.4 + 0.5

= 0.9m

Time taken to cover 0.9m = √2h/g = √2(0.9)/10 = 3/10√2

Time taken to cover 0.4m = √2h/g = √2(0.4)/10 = 2/10√2

Total time taken = 3/10√2 - 2/10√2

= √2/10

Answer: The time taken by stone to pass the window span is √2/10 seconds

Time taken to pass the window = 0.14 seconds.

Explanation:

Height of window = 0.5m

Height of the stone = 0.4m above window

Total distance traveled by stone = 0.5 + 0.4 = 0.9 m

We know that distance = 1/2 gt²

 So t² = 2/g(distance)

  Therefore t = √(2s/g)

Time taken by the stone to cover full distance =   √(2/g) * s  where g is taken as 10 m/s2

= √2(0.9)/10

= √2(9)/100

= 3/10*√2

Time taken to cover 0.4 = = √2(0.4)/10 = 2/10 *√2

Time taken to pass the window = 3/10√2 - 2/10√2 = 1/10(√2) = 1.414/10 = 0.14 seconds.
