A stone is dropped into a well 44 m deep and the sound of splash is heard after 3.12 sec. Find the speed of sound in air

v = s / t

as the time 3.12 s is the echo (time to go and and after reflecting from suface to come back ) 3.12 / 2 = 1.56 s

v = 44 / 1.56

first the stone will take some time to reach bottom

    by kinematic equation

  S = ut + 1/2 at ²

  44 = (0)t + 1/2(10)t²

    5t²= 44

     t² = 44 /5

      t² ≅9

      t = 3

by substracting   this time in 3.12 we get time taken for sound to reach              height 44m is

          = 3.12 - 3

          = .12 s

sow speed of sound is

     speed = distance / time

                 = 44 / 0.12

                 = 365 m/s
