, it is acted upon by the force of gravity which acts towards the center of the earth. Hence there is an acceleration in opposite direction (retardation) in this case which slows the speed of the ball. At maximum height, the ball is momentarily at rest as it changes its direction of motion before accelerating towards the surface of earth.
