A stone is vertically projected up with a velocity of 25 m/s. What is its time of descent (if g=10 m/s)?

The equation of motion for constant acceleration is given by,

v = u + at

s = ut + at²/2

v² = u² + 2as

Where,

v : final velocity

u : initial velocity

a : acceleration

s : displacement

t : time

Since, the acceleration on body is due to the gravity.

‘a’ will be replaced by ‘g’ (9.8 m/s²).

*Direction of acceleration is important*

Using first equation of motion,

v = u - gt , ‘-’is due to the motion of body is against the gravity.

As soon as body reached the highest point, its velocity will be 0 m/s at that time and intially it was thrown with a velocity of 25 m/s.

So,

0 =25 - gt

=> t = 25/10 = 2.5 sec

This is the time taken to reached the highest point, therefore body will take same amount of time to reached the starting point i.e. 2.5 sec.

Time of descent = Time taken to reach the starting point.

Time of descent = 2.5 sec

Explanation :

EQUATION OF MOTION: v = u-gt

s = ut +1/2at^2

v^2 = u^2 + 2as

Considering:

V = 0

U = 25ms

G = 10ms^2

Now, Using the first Equation of Motion: v = u-gt

On substituting the values we get :

0 = 25 - 10(t)

0 = 25 - 10t

10t = 25

t = 25/10

t = 2.5 s

Therefore the time of descent will be 2.5 seconds
