A stone on ground has zero energy but the same stone has energy when it is lifted at a height.Why?

as we know potential energy is possessed by the body at the rest position .

since the body on the ground has potential energy in it due to its rest position, as

P.E.= mgh, where h=0

again for lifting the stone against gravity we are applying energy to it as a result the stone gains energy.
