A stone weighs 500 N. Calculate the pressure exerted by it if it makes a contact with a surface of area 25 cm2.

Solution:-

Force (F) = 500 N

↬ The stone makes a contact with a surface of area 25 cm².

Area (A) = 25 cm²

↬ 25/10000

↬ 0.0025 m² or 25 × 10-⁴ m²

GIVEN:-

We have to find the Pressure (P) exerted by the stone.

Pressure is defined as force per unit area.

i.e.

↬Pressure =

\dfrac{Force}{Area}

Put the known values in above formula

↬Pressure =

 \dfrac{500}{0.0025}

↬Pressure =

200000  \: or  \: 2 × 10^{5}10 \:  N/m²

Also..

1  \: N/m² = 1  \: Pa  \: (pascal)

So..

↬Pressure =

2 × 10^{5}Pa
