A storage capacitor on a RAM chip has a capacity of 55pF. If the capacitor is charged to 5.3V, how many excess electrons are on its negative plate?

The capacity of the capacitor is,  C  =  55 pF

The voltage across the capacitor is,  v = 5.3  V

The charge on the capacitor is,

Q = C V

∴ Q = 55 × 10 ⁻¹²× 5.3 C

Q = 2.9 × 10 ⁻¹⁰   C

Number of electrons on the plate is,

n = 2.9 ×10⁻¹⁰  ÷ 1.6 ×10⁻¹⁹

∴  n  =1.81 × 10 ⁹
