'What would a girl do studying?' They all had asked her. Anyway, geography had nothing to do with cooking and looking after children, they said. It used to fill her with so much anger. She still studied from the books her brothers got home and the notes they made. She listened to conversations between elders, from a distance of course, trying to understand the world of politics and the press. She loved to write, once she learnt how to with the help of her elder brother who always had a special liking towards her. When she was married off to a stranger at the age of twenty, she couldn't have asked for anything better. Her husband helped her write the board exams and then even go to college. She passed with flying colours and her husband was so very proud of her. Now, when thirty years had passed and five of her books published, no one still wonders how a girl can write so well.
