Once I visited a bank with a friend. I had to credit a cheque. I took the bank receipt and waited for the turn. During that time, my friend asked a simple question as what do banks do. I answered The banks stores money. He said no, you are not correct. I asked him why and he said that my sentence was incorrect, it should have either been that the banks store money. He further added that this is called a Subject-verb disagreement in English grammar

When the Subject Disagreed with the  Verb

Once there were two grammatical concepts had a fierce argument as to who was more important than the other out of the two. The subject was of very calm and composed nature. He calmly said to the verb, “Look verb, both of us are equally important; but you must follow me. If you don’t there could be a mistake.”

The verb became pacified and asked, “How could that be?”

The subject further explained, “Look, if you don’t inflect according to my singularity and plurality, there could be a mistake in the entire sentence. For example, if I am singular and you remain plural, there would be problem; similarly if I am plural, and you remain singular, then there could also be a problem.”

The verb said, “Oh! Now I see. We must be in agreement if we have to be flawless.”  

The subject smilingly said, “Yes, now you get it. I am so happy.”

Moral: When the subject and the verb agree then the sentence is error-free.
