A straight wire AB is stretched between the pole pieces of a strong magnet as shown. The wire
is connected to a battery through a key. What will happen when plug is inserted in the key?
Name the rule that you use for the purpose. State the rule. What will happen, when the (i)
terminals of the battery are reversed (ii) pole pieces of the magnet are reversed?

On inserting the key, electric current passes through the wire setting up an electric field along with the prevailing magnetic field.
This results in the wire bending upwards.
Right hand thumb rule is used to determine the direction.
On reversing the polarity, the direction of flow of current flowing in the wire changes, which enables causing the wire to bend downwards.
