let the downstream be (x+6)
then
let the upstream be (Y-8)

(x+6)=(y-8)
then solve this
then do
S=D/T
so the answer will come

Let the speed of steamer in still water be = x
Speed of stream=2km/hr
Speed of steamer=(x+2)km/hr
Distance covered in 1hr= (x+2)
Distance covered in 6hrs=6(x+2)
Distance between 2 ports=6(x+2) ...(i)
It is given that while going upstream it covers the same dostance but in 8hrs.
Speed of steamer=(x-2)km/hr
Distance covered in 1 hr=(x-2) km
Distance covered in 8hrs=8(x-2)km ...(ii)
From (i) and (ii) we have,
6(x+2)=8(x-2)
=6x+12=8x-16
=6x-8x=-16-12
=-2x=-28
x=14km/hr
Check:
Speed of steamer upstream=14-2
=12
Speed of steamer downstream=14+2=16
Distance covered in 6hrs while going downstream
=16×6=96km
Distance covered in 8hrs while going upstream= 12×8=96
Hence verified
