Answer:

let x=speed of steamer in still water

x+3=speed of steamer downstream

x-3=speed of steamer upstream

distance=travel time*speed (same for both directions)

..

15(x+3)=20(x-3)

15x+45=20x-60

5x=105

x=21

distance=15(x+3)=15*24=360

distance between two towns=360 km

HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU......

thank you!!!

Given :

Time taken when going downstream = 15 hours

Time taken when going upstream = 20 hours

Speed of water = 3 km/h

To find :

The distance between the two towns .

Solution :

Let the speed of steamer in still water be v km/h .

Then , the speed of steamer downstream = v+3 km/h

and , the speed of steamer upstream = v-3 km/h

Now , the distance covered by the streamer going downstream and upstream are equal .

Then ,

=> 15 * ( v + 3 ) = 20 * ( v - 3 )

=> 15v + 45 = 20v - 60

=> 5v = 105

=> v = 21 km/h

now ,

distance = 15 * ( v + 3 ) = 15 * 24 = 360 km

The distance between the two towns is 360 km .
